Classical Revolution was founded in the fall of 2006 when several former and current San Francisco Conservatory of Music students met at Revolution Café in San Francisco's Mission District for public chamber music reading sessions. After a few well-received sessions, Classical Revolution was offered a weekly Sunday night slot, which continues to this day.

Over the past two and half years, more than 200 musicians have performed as part of the weekly "Chamber Jams". These musicians include international concert soloists and members of the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Turtle Island Quartet, Arditti Quartet, Quartet San Francisco, Afiara Quartet, and many other world class ensembles. Other players are current students or recent graduates from some of the nation's top conservatories, or are accomplished non-professional musicians who play with the group in order to sustain their musical lives. This inter-relation between professional and non-professional musicians is a fundamental part of the organization: dissolving boundaries that result from the specialization of musicians and bringing people, both audience and performers, together.

Classical Revolution engages the community by offering chamber music performances in highly accessible venues—such as bars, cafes, and art galleries—and collaborating with local musicians and artists from a variety of styles and backgrounds. With the goal of bringing classical music to an ever-widening audience, they seek out a fan base of their peers: thinkers, artists, fellow musicians, construction workers, bartenders, cabinetmakers, techies, young professionals, and anyone else interested in broadening their musical tastes.
Classical Revolution has participated in diverse collaborations including performances with jazz and hip-hop musicians, painters, writers, and dancers. Since Classical Revolution began hosting weekly chamber music readings at Revolution Café in 2006, they have presented music at many diverse venues, including the de Young Museum, Legion of Honor, Mission Cultural Center, 111 Minna, Cafe du Nord, Makeout Room, Hemlock Tavern, SOMArts, Stern Grove Festival, and dozens of living rooms, backyards, and other public spaces. Classical Revolution is a resident ensemble of the Red Poppy Art House and a regular participant in the Mission Arts and Performance Project.
The Classical Revolution concept has spread to other cities, with chapters currently active in Portland, Reno, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati, Berlin, Toronto, Ann Arbor, and Cincinnati. Future plans are being discussed for Los Angeles, Houston, Boston, Amsterdam, and Calgary.
Classical Revolution is fiscally sponsored by San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the service of chamber music in California.
